color palette: wild purple artichoke flowers

// photo: Erika Firm

Last weekend my family went on an adventure to gather wild artichoke blooms. We snipped an entire wagonload of the wild purple artichoke flowers, and I just love the color palette. Leave it up to Mother Nature to take my least favorite color, purple, and make it look fabulous. Who knew that mixing shades of purple, from lilac to deep aubergine, pairing it with artichoke green would be so beautiful? I’d love to see an interior designer take this palette and apply it to a dramatic dining room. It’s hard to show on screen, but the purple of the soft flowers is super bright—almost fluorescent. Bumblebees love them (spot one in the photo!). Mom is working on some arrangements using the blooms and I’ll share them with you soon.

from the backyard: artichokes

I love artichokes! I think this one, in our backyard, is almost ready to eat. The other day while on a walk with my son I spotted a large patch of wild artichokes. Do you think it’s okay to pick them? I like them steamed and dipped in vinaigrette.

inspiration: california

california wild flowers

I’m so excited the mimosa trees are just starting to bloom. They are my favorite Southern California tree. I’ll take photos and post next week. FYI, the mimosa is a huge inspiration to me … I have a wedding suite designed after it, as well as a lovely sympathy card. It’s also my mother’s favorite bloom, because it reminds her of her home town in the South of France.

inspiration: trees

cards & journals by old school stationers

My friend L sent me a pic she took earlier in the month of fall Aspen trees in Colorado. They remind me of Brian’s gorgeous work over at Old School Stationers. Here in Southern California the trees don’t really change colors much … it’s still in the 80′s at our house. While I love the “perfect” weather here, sometimes I do miss a good rainstorm and a crisp October afternoon!

sneak peek

Here’s a sneak peek at one of our newest designs: Sullivan. It’s inspired by wild seagrass on Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina and California poppies. We’ll debut this new design later this month at the National Stationery Show.
