Hello, April!

April 2013 desk calendar by Delphine do something silly every day

April-2013-Delphine-CalendarApril is here. Bring on the sunshine!

This month’s desk calendar quote was inspired by someone I’ve known my whole life. A few years ago, on what was otherwise the most horrible day, Rachel C. told me “do something silly every day.” When I’m struggling through a bad day I try to remember her advice; even if I don’t have the energy to do something silly, I still manage to feel a little better just thinking about what she told me. Hope her advice helps you the next time you’re having an icky day. XO —E.

Artist Lulie Wallace

Artist Lulie Wallace Charleston South Carolina via DelphineLast night after work I popped over to Stems to see Charleston artist Lulie Wallace‘s stunning floral paintings. I think my jaw dropped to the floor when I walked in. I wanted to take them all home with me! I also really want to paint my living room that gorgeous dark emerald green color now. Who’s with me?

Artist Lulie Wallace at Stems in Charleston South Carolina via DelLulie was super adorable and gracious. I was so focused on the paintings I forgot to snap a pic with her, but trust me: adorable. I wanted to squeeze her.
Lulie Wallace floral paintings at Delphine studio in CharlestonYesterday I was feeling a little homesick for the bright colors of Southern California, but the exhibit cheered me right up. Lulie’s color palette seems to be pulled straight from my dreams: lots of spring green, chartreuse, yellow, peach, with a touch of blue iris  … and a mini touch of nearly neon). I have my eye on one of her larger paintings for my home, but for now I couldn’t resist a few of her smaller pieces for the Delphine studio. I had planned to give a few of these away as gifts, but it’s going to be hard to part with them.

in the press: stationery trends first interactive issue

I may be a print designer, but I LOVE interactive magazines. I was super thrilled to be included in Stationery Trends’ very first interactive issue (Early Spring 2011/Pre-NSS). Many thanks to editor Sarah Schwartz and to author Abby Heugel for the cover story: an interview and profile with Delphine designer Erika Firm (moi). Merci, ladies! My story starts on page 26, but the whole issue is packed with paper goodness.

color palette: secret succulent garden

Mom planted a bunch of succulent cuttings in this pretty Italian wall well we had around the house. Who knows where we pick up all this stuff?!?? Love the color palette: verdant green, spring, rhubarb, stone and flame.

color palette: romantic spring blossoms

The fruit trees in our backyard are blooming. There’s something magical about a pretty blossom on a leafless branch. I love the stark contrast. The colors in this photo may be one of the all time classic color combinations for weddings: soft, romantic blush pinks, with creamy off white, gray, and a pop of brighter pink. The palette of a bouquet of pink and white peonies, or a ballerina.

a top ten Pantone color for Spring 2011: Coral Rose

Now that New York Fashion Week is just about over, PANTONE has released its report of the top 10 colors for Spring 2011. One of my favorites is Coral Rose. I think Carolina Herrera showed it best:

I just love Coral Rose paired with gold. Super sexy, right? With this fabulous coral Carolina Herrera gown, the right fancy lipstick (by YSL) is mandatory, as is a classic cocktail (Cosmo, anyone?). I couldn’t resist the cheeky but glam koi handbay (by Judith Leiber). The whole orangy-gold look reminds me of vintage lustreware (bowl from my personal collection of goodies).

summer yellows

Technically, these are spring flowers … but they always remind me of summer. I love yellow ranunculus.

nautical stripes for spring

Every March the nautical stripes come out. I think it’s part of the “resort” or “cruise” collections at all the stores. You can count on it, just like every September plaid will make an appearance. I’m comforted by these classics! Stripes really put me in the mood for spring.

details: 1: set sail trousers (anthropologie) ::: 2: Nautical personal stationery and calling cards (delphine) ::: 3: nautical tote (l.l. bean) ::: 4: low heeled espadrille slides (old navy) ::: 5: pin tuck white shirt (loft) ::: 6: anchor charms (cardsandcraft, etsy) ::: 7: rope necklace (brooklynrehab, etsy) ::: 8: nautical striped scarf (h&m) ::: 9: vintage brass anchor locket (thebumblingbird, etsy)

I’ll admit that I have more than a couple stripey tees in my closet, including this new one by Jean Paul Gaultier for Target:

Because one entire side of the shirt is open, I also bought a box of safety pins. I plan to wear a white tank underneath, and also “sew” it up with different sized safety pins. It’s going to be my beach & pool coverup this summer.
