NSS Preview: Sideshow Press

NSS 2013 Preview Sideshow Press Charleston via DelphineToday I’m super duper excited to share a preview of my Charleston neighbor’s stationery line, Sideshow Press. (Heeeey, neighbor!) I’m thrilled for them as they venture to the Javits for the first time as exhibitors (they’re setting up as I type this) with their fab new line, which includes letterpress cards, wrapping paper, totes, pencil holders, journals and other desktop necessities. All inspired (obv) by the outdoors: canoe trips, crackling campfires, cabins and other woodsy adventures. I’ve got my eye on those handy note pads, which would, indeed, be handy for storing all those darn passwords that I keep forgetting.

If you’re headed to the show, be sure to stop by to see the ladies of Sideshow Press at booth #1852 and tell them “hey.”

8th Annual Stationery Meetup featured in Stationery Trends

Delphine-NSS-Meetup-2012-Stationery-TrendsIt’s a very good snail mail day when any issue of Stationery Trends magazine lands on our desk, but it was one of the best days ever when the latest (Spring 2013 – NSS) issue arrived with a lovely story about our 8th Annual Stationery Meetup.

stationery show meetup 2012 delphine partyLast year’s meetup was covered in Stationery Trends’ inaugural “An Event To Remember” column & I just love looking at the pictures and re-living last year’s big bash, which was co-hosted by Oh So Beautiful Paper

nss 2013 stationery trends issue at delphineLets talk about the gorgeous redesign of the magazine for a moment. The Stationery Trends team handled everything in-house … and in less than six months!

Sarah Schwartz, editor, says, “At a company retreat this past fall, the entire Stationery Trends team met for what we’ve all started calling ‘the fireside chat’ — it was at a B&B in front of a fake fireplace. During it, we reviewed several consumer books and discussed in a rather macro way what we hoped to achieve with the new look. Later, our graphic designer Laura Nagle and I would usually talk about each specific element  — logo, cover, TOC, headers, footers, departments like Fresh Picks  — and come up with three options to show the team, who would vote on them.”

As a graphic designer, the “design by committee” approach that they used scares the pants off of me. But they pulled it off and the new Stationery Trends looks stunning. I love the clean, new look, the perfect black and white logo, and the fun mix of fonts used throughout the magazine.

After reading the issue cover — insert shout out to my girl and fellow Chromatic & Co. designer Claudia at Fig. 2 Design for landing the front cover — to cover I got super excited about heading to New York for the annual National Stationery Show in a few weeks. I can’t wait to reconnect with all the paper peeps at the J. Javits Center!

National Stationery Show 2012

National Stationery Show 2012 DelphineIt’s my favorite time of year: National Stationery Show week. NSS 2012 is turning out to be a beautiful show. Here are a few snapshots of some of the lovely things I spotted at the Javits Center this week so far:

National Stationery Show 2012 NSS Clockwise from top left: Fawnsberg (LOVE the amazing hand lettering, sweet illustrations … and the gum eraser giveaways), Mohawk Paper (isn’t their new logo fab?), Paper + Cup design (sweet + chic retro office supply style warms my heart), Flywheel Press (80′s references make me feel slightly old, but happy).

Linda and Harriet NSS 2012

Linda & Harriett combined 5 of my very favorite things in one product: a hand lettered, neon, gold accented, screen printed oversize calendar. On my wish list!!!

Wild Ink Press National Stationery Show 2012Rebecca’s Wild Ink Press booth is beyond spectacular & my favorite so far. Love love love the ombre look. My iphone pic does not do it justice : (

I’ll be walking the show again today. Follow my Instagram feed @delphinestudio or follow me on Twitter @delphine_studio for live updates.

Stationery Meetup May 22, 2012 in NYC

National Stationery Show 2012 Meetup DelphineOh So Beautiful Paper is co-hosting with me this year. We have chosen a beautiful location in Manhattan, Hudson Terrace, for the party. [Tuesday, May 22, 2012 from 7PM-9PM at Hudson Terrace in NYC].

I’m really looking forward to the 2012 National Stationery Show. I don’t have a booth, am not showing my line, but am celebrating being part of this wonderful industry by throwing a party with Nole. I’m super thankful to be part of the world of paper + design! The party started as a birthday party for me, but has grown into a celebration of my favorite things with some of my favorite people in the world: other stationery designers.

Special thanks (and extra big hugs) to our lovely sponsors for helping to make the meetup happen again this year: Crane, Felt & Wire, Ladies of Letterpress, Mohawk, Paper + Cup, Stationery HQ, The Sweetest Occasion, and Tradeshow Bootcamp.

All stationery industry peeps (designers, exhibitors, reps, buyers, store owners, bloggers, wedding planners, stationery + wedding industry press) are welcome. Space is limited at the venue, so you must RSVP for admission. If you’d like to be on the invitation list please shoot stationerymeetup [at] gmail [dot] com an email with your full name and name of your business & we’ll add you to the evite list.  If you attended last year you’re already on the evite list and will receive an invitation in early May.

Yes, we’ll have goodie bags again. Trust me, you do not want to miss these. I don’t want to spoil the surprise, but you can be sure it will be filled to the brim with paper goodness. The first 100 guests will receive a goodie bag.

Making a Wholesale Wedding Invitation Album

Making a wholesale wedding invitation albumIn preparation for this afternoon’s Tradeshow Bootcamp seminar about wholesale wedding invitation albums, I thought I’d share a peek behind the scenes at how to put together an invitation album.

It all starts with good designs! Once you have those down (gulp) it’s time to print lots of samples, get organized, and start up an assembly line. We built a temporary shelter outside behind the studio with lots of fans and ventilation so we wouldn’t croak from using so much spraymount. We went through at least five cases of the stuff.

Delphine wholesale wedding albumThe inside of our album is designed for the dealer first, the bride second. Why? Because if the dealer isn’t happy with the book it will never get pulled from the shelf! Things we include to make the album easy to shop:

1. A few pages of info … about the studio, a primer on print methods, tips on how to customize our designs, and pretty photos of our designs in colors other than sampled in the book. Pages of ink swatches, papers, fonts, etc. And, of course, simple, easy to use price pages.

2. A divider page to separate each design (we have 22!). The divider page has the name of the suite, a keyword that relates to the type of wedding we envision the design working for (i.e. elegant, romantic, whimsical), and a short story about the design — what inspired it, what type of wedding we think it’s best for, etc. The divider pages are all different colors, to help the dealer flip to the right page.

3. Foldout pages. The front page shows invitation and response cards. The inside shows detail cards, like accommodations, thank yous, menus, etc. On the right side we show party goodies (the details that make an event, in my opinion).

4. The back of the divider page has a schematic with thumbnails of all the items available in the design.

5. Perhaps most important for the dealer: an AS SHOWN card, listing all the ink colors and fonts used in the shown samples.

Delphine Dealer GoodiesOf course we LOVE our dealers and want to make the sales process as easy for them as possible. If they are fumbling around the book looking for swatches and prices they aren’t focusing on the bride! So we made a separate Dealer Deck, with swatches of all our inks, patterns, fonts, papers, envelopes and more. It also has a FAQ card listing turnaround time, quick pricing for 100 invitation suites, and our contact information.

We also give dealers a disc with blog and website ready photos for their use, PDF order forms, and plenty of loose samples for display.

My biggest advice for putting together a wholesale wedding invitation album is to make friends with a local stationer, ask a lot of questions and do a bunch of research. Oh, and don’t underprice yourself. Make every order worth your time! Just because you’re an artist doesn’t mean you want to work for free. And trust me, the dealers are working hard too, and want each order to pay off, too.

For more pics and details about how we made our wedding album visit this post.

If you are a stationer interested in carrying the new Delphine Signature Collection wedding invitation album please get in touch. We have a few books left looking for a happy home.

NSS 2011 recap

I’ve returned from a whirlwind trip to New York for the National Stationery Show (NSS). Although I didn’t exhibit, I still managed to run myself ragged … running to meetings, parties, dinners, impromptu conferences, snapping photos, taking notes, making friends, planning future projects & events. I had a great time, except for the part where I was sick and the part where I was stuck on a loooong flight home, ill, on my birthday : (

It will take me a few more days to decompress (and catch up on actual work), but meanwhile if you’d like to read about the show, I highly recommend these sources:

Oh So Beautiful Paper: Nole has the very best roundups on all the new stuff! It’s like going to the show without having to step foot in the Javits Center yourself.

Brooklyn Bride and Mom Inc. Daily have fun recaps of the 7th annual NSS meetup.

I am also working on a series of graphic design trend report posts from NSS (think Ikat, overprinting, neon, gold, watercolor) and the first one went live today on Creative-SoCal.

Thanks for understanding as posts are sporadic the next week or so as I recover from the show and my illness. Special hugs to all of you whom I met at the show who mentioned to me that you read my blog. I truly appreciate your support!
