My Newest Treasure: Rock Crystal Necklace

Natural Rock Crystal Necklace by delphineA few weeks ago I went to the Gem Faire in Del Mar, California with my mom. Mom, among her many talents, is a jewelry designer. I scored a pile of natural crystals and Mom turned them into this gorgeous statement necklace. It’s made of real rock crystals, so it’s quite heavy, but totally worth the neck strain. Merci, Maman!

Crystallized Color Palette

crystal bead color paletteLast weekend I went to the Gem Faire at the Del Mar Fairgrounds with Mom. I picked up a few strands of crystals and beads. Can’t wait to show you what she makes for me. I’m particularly excited about the big natural crystals (the white ones that look like rocks). I’m going to have so many shiny and sparkly new necklaces that I will just have to find reasons to leave the studio so I can wear them.

I think the vendors at the show (which is open to the public, by the way … you don’t need to have a wholesale license) picked up on the colors of my outfit—comfy jeans, grey sweater, pale green + taupe purse, neutral accessories—and kept showing me strands of the same color beads. It totally worked: I liked their suggestions and they made sales. It’s a great tip to remember when you’re exhibiting at a trade show: make suggestions to buyers. As a buyer, shows are totally overwhelming. A little nudge in the right direction is welcome in my book.

Papercut Inspired Jewelry

Papercut Sterling Silver Jewelry by Emma van Leest for Polli

I’m in awe of the delicate detail in these pieces of jewelry. Melbourne paper cutting artist, Emma van Leest, drew inspiration from explorer’s dreams of paradise. Aussie jeweler Polli tanslated the paper cut art into fantastic stainless steel jewelry. I like the idea of wearing a fantasy around your neck: when navigating real life is a little rough, touch your necklace and dream of what could be.

color palette: bright and bejeweled inspired by gwyneth paltrow’s oscar 2011 look

I missed most of the Academy Awards this year because I was working on a deadline. But I did manage to catch a glimpse here and there, and I loved Gwyneth Paltrow’s dress and brooch. The stark silvery white background, with an unexpected pop of bright color is such a happy color palette.

No. 1 Gwyneth Paltrow’s dress at the Oscars 2011 inspired this colorful palette (photo by Adriana M. Barraza/WENN.com)    No. 2. I love using the Kendra Scott color bar — I created these colorful earrings to mimic the look of Gwyneth’s jeweled brooch   No. 3 A fun fondue set from Crate & Barrel — would be fun for a screening party   No. 4 White couch with bright chairs by Roche Bobois   No. 5 Gwyneth Paltrow’s brooch at the Oscars 2011   No. 6. Delphine’s Ava and Amelie wedding invitations — our most popular invitation designs have been printed in just about any color combo you can imagine. I especially like them in bright colors like yellow and pink   No. 7 Alice in Wonderland — love the colors in this Walt Disney cartoon classic  No. 8 Pink and Orange china by William Yeoward from Michael C. Fina — I think they’d look fabulous as a mix and match set.

At the Pantone color trend seminar I attended last month, “black and white with pops of bright colors” was one of the color palettes discussed as being important for 2011 and 2012 product design. I like what I see so far!

statement necklace

Mémé Delphine’s favorite store is Talbots. (She pronounces it “Tal-bo,” which makes it sound so chic). So I have spent many hours sitting in the “husband” chair waiting for her. But next time I’m in there I am going to head over to the accessories department, because I see that they have some very cool, hip necklaces, like the pretty one shown above. I like the understated hues, paired with not-too-shiny gold. It’s chunky, but not crazy heavy looking.

Choosing a statement piece of jewelry for your wedding day is tricky — look for something that reflects your personality, isn’t too trendy, and will stand the test of time. I particularly like something that you can dress down, and wear with a white shirt and jeans. Every time I wear my wedding day necklace I think of the first time I wore it, and how amazing that day was.

plum wedding details

I’m constantly amazed by the incredible talent on Etsy. Don’t you love this ranunculus necklace by BlushEnvy? I love the gorgeous deep pink colors. Would look lovely for an “aubergine dream” or plum wedding. Can you believe the necklace is made of paper? Really, it is! I think it would be a gorgeous accessory for a black tie wedding. I see it paired with a lovely, elegant heirloom organza J.Crew wedding gown and a classic and romantic ribbon rosette clutch in dark iris.

Add some extra chic details, like a short bird cage veil from Brenda’s Bridal Veils (another Etsy score), and the look really comes together. For a finishing touch, exquisite diamond jewelry. I found the emerald cut diamond wedding ring and the pretty teardrop earrings on Overstock.com.

color palette: brooklyn flea

A visit to Brooklyn Flea last month inspired this color palette full of hipster-ish hues, including Rayblack, Brooklyn Yard, Schoolbus yellow and Hipster Red. I saw quite a few people in Brooklyn wearing vintage keys around their necks and think it will be a jewelry trend in the not so distant future here on the west coast, too.

wish list: party jewels

All of a sudden my social calendar is full of cocktail parties! Yay! But what to wear??? On my wish list now: these three lovely party jewels. The Banana Republic multi-strand silver necklace with a leaf detail would be a great layering piece (and it’s on sale!). You can’t beat Forever21′s awesome prices. This cool twisted necklace is only $11 and the darling turquoise bead chandelier earrings are even less!

bejeweled: fanciful fish

I wore my new fishy necklace the other day. It’s pretty wacky and big (the fish is about 4 inches long) for me, but there’s just something about it that I love. As a rule, I don’t buy much jewelry since I’m able to “borrow” from my mom’s inventory (she’s a jewelry designer). But at $4.80 I couldn’t pass this fishy up. I got it at Forever 21. For less than five bucks. Did I mention that it cost less than five dollars? For real.

before: semi-precious beads

Some of the gorgeous strands of semi-precious beads that my mom picked up at the last gem show. I’ll post photos of the necklaces she made using these later this week. The white ones are jade! I had no idea that jade came in white. I especially love the turquoise and green “giant jelly bean” beads. They do look like candy, right? You can see some of her finished pieces here.
