behind the scenes: design is art show

I had a great time last night at the ART IS DESIGN? SHOW at Basic in San Diego. I was lucky to exhibit not in the gallery, but right next to Jennifer Price’s pop-up shop. It was tough to stare enviously at all her amazing furniture and vintage and found treasures last night and not spend my last dime.

Unfortunately I lost my voice early in the evening (it was crazy loud in there) so I didn’t get to chit chat or mingle as much as I had hoped. Many thanks to everyone who came out to support design last night!

wish list: letter ‘e’ vintage sign

You may have noticed I have a thing for “E”s. I know it’s a bit on the narcissistic side (“E” is my nickname), but I love them. I have a collection of “E” and “e” signs in my studio and would love to add this cool one I spied on Etsy last night. It would be the largest one in my collection. I think I’d paint it Jade green, a shade just shy of emerald. I’ve been loving that color lately. (Okay, I’ve loved that color always). You can check out this vintage E sign in SalvageNation‘s Etsy shop.

UPDATE: SalvageNation has offered Delphine-Ephemera readers 10 percent off the puchase of the large letters like the one shown here. So you can buy me that “E.” Just joking. Sort of. Read their comment below for details.

color palette: romantic industrial

Color palette I’m loving lately: romantic industrial. Peaches, buffs, warm neutrals, warm greys, with a smidge of zinc and shimmer.

wish list: vintage factory furniture

uhhhh… whoops. i write this a few weeks ago and totally forgot to hit the publish button. duh…

I’ve always had a thing for vintage industrial and factory furniture. As a child I loved visiting my dad’s office (he’s an executive in the machine tool industry). My favorite part of my visit was always touring the factory floor with my dad. I even got to wear those crazy eye protection goggles and hard hats. I remember in particular a giant factory in Cincinnati, with floors and floors of dirty and grimy steel work tables, spinny stools, work boxes and bins & bins of parts. It’s no wonder that my own studio has a few pieces of vintage factory furniture (including a stool from his last factory — they were going to throw it out during a move!).

I think if I had a lot of time and a giant truck I’d love to drive around the midwest (I can only imagine all the goodies rusting away in Detroit right now) collecting this stuff. Sigh.

Stools, from Left to Right: an Ebay treasure; turner barstools, crate and barrel; backless shop stool, uline; spin barstool, crate and barrel. Bottom image, desk, chair and accessories all from Factory 20.

inspiration: factory orange and yellow

A recent visit to my dad’s factory (top images) inspired the factory orange and steel grey color scheme for a project I’m working on now for Strathmore (bottom images). When I was a kid I loved visiting my dad at his factories and walking the floor with him. I inherited an appreciation for mechanical equipment, which, I think, is the reason I was drawn to the craft of letterpress.
