Family Halloween Costume Ideas

Today our UPS delivery guy was wearing a hoodie parka with his shorts … I think it’s a sure sign that it is, indeed, Fall here in Charleston. Now that it’s Fall, the next logical thing on the mighty to do list is to think of a really clever Halloween costume.

Canadian Flag Spandex Halloween CostumeOur son is thinking about being a robot this year, and I’m trying to convince John to be a Canadian (long story), but so far we haven’t decided on anything yet. If you have any great ideas please let me know.

Blue and Silver Holiday Dessert Bar

Holiday Dessert Bar Buffet Styling by DelphineI had so much fun styling Jessica Davis‘s holiday party dessert bar. She thought I was crazy when I asked her to empty out her hutch so I could use it for displaying the dessert goodies (usually it’s full of baby blankets and other kids photography photo shoot props).

The candy bar had a pale blue, white and silver theme. Of course there aren’t too many foods out there that are blue, so most everything was white. We made an exception to the color palette rule for chocolate! I used lots of white candy dishes, bowls and plates to create different heights and layers. Then I threw in some turquoise, white and silver Christmas ornaments and glittery props. Everything shown is from Jessica, her fiancé, or my personal collection.

The party was a great success. Jessica raised well over $1,000 for OMO CHILD, and I am so happy to say that the raffle prizes were a hit. My son won the iPad! He hasn’t put it down since!

week in review: january 24 2011

I can’t believe it’s Friday already. The week was a bit of a blur, as I’m recovering from a double whammie of a painful kidney infection AND a cold (and allergies to my beloved mimosas, which are in bloom on our property now … so I guess technically it’s a triple whammie). But work in the studio went on …

In case you missed it, here’s what happened on the blog this week:

• I shared the final post about our son’s Root Beer Kegger 7th Birthday party (promise I’m done chatting about that now).

• Valentine’s Day is around the corner, and I laid out the perfect Valentine’s Day date outfit (now if only I could convince  my husband to take me on a date!)

• I shared images of one of my very favorite graphic design projects of all time: seed packet packaging designs for Isabella Smith. This project was a joy to work on!

• Christian Dior inspired me with some truly fantabulous gowns. So dreamy!

• Kathy and I started working on plans for North County Graphic Design (NCGD) for 2011. I’m super excited about what we have in store for the year! If you’re interested in helping out, joining, or just have suggestions please comment or contact me directly : )

This weekend there will be mad work done on the Delphine website, so if something is buggy please let us know. We’re adding new designs all the time — to spot them first check out the Save the Date section of the site. I’m most excited about making Valentine’s Day cards with my first grader. He’s not fired up about it, even though I promised glitter, glue, scissors, pretty papers and doilies. I have a feeling I will be doing all the crafting. Any ideas on how to get a 7 year old boy excited about Valentine’s Day? He’s supposed to make 20 cards for his classmates, and I have a feeling I may need to resort to bribery (candy).

gift guide: for the equestrian

While cleaning up our son’s playroom I came across my old Breyer horses buried in the bottom of the toy chest. Like most little girls, I dreamed of having my own pony. I took riding lessons when I was in first grade, and did a bit of trail riding as a teen, but haven’t been on a horse since college.

I live in a major horse community now (my “village” is called Rancho Santa Fe due to all the horse ranches), and have grown to love the effortlessly chic look all the equestrian ladies have around here. The polo players who frequent the coffee shop aren’t too shabby, either. Major swoon. But I digress …

Here are some gifts the horse-lover in your life will love: No. 1: Horse engravings, pillows and trophy lamp by Two’s Company  No. 2: Red plaid throw from Williams-Sonoma Home  No. 3: Equestrian riding boots (the real deal) by TuffRider  No. 4: Limited Edition Shearling Jacket from J. Crew  No. 5: Vintage Horseshoe necklace from Freshly Fig (Etsy)  No. 6: Antique English Wing Back Leather Sofa from Dispela on 1stDibs

No. 7 Wouldn’t this Deer lamp look chic with a plaid lamp shade and/or a coat of glossy paint (pale turquoise? red? black? yellow? white?)   No. 8 LOVE these Ralph Lauren glasses. I have a set of them and use them all the time.  No. 9 I love the trend of vintage trophies used as vases. Even better when they’re painted in a fun gloss finish.

wish list: ipad

I know, I know, it’s not a very original wish list item. But I really do wish I had an iPad (and a cute iPad cozy to carry it around, like the felt one above by ccommeca).

Sorry I haven’t had time to work on cool gift guides for the blog this year. I have been busy trying to track down items from my son’s own wish list. This year he assembled a BOOK of items he’d like Santa to bring to him. Topping his list this year: Legos and Hexbugs.

not too spooky: halloween party ideas

We have a first grader who is a little young for lots of the scarier Halloween party ideas out there. Here are some of my favorite not too spooky ideas to celebrate this ghoulish holiday.

1: Bat Halloween Party Invitation from Cardstore.com hint at a spooky time, but won’t totally scare off a kid from coming to the party   2: Decorating Bat cookies (cutter from Copper Gifts) and  3: Ghost cookies (cutter from Wilton) would make a fun party activity. Have older siblings or an adult ice all the cookies, and let the little ones shake shake shake the sprinkles all over & add the spooky eyes.

4: I love these scary scientific bottle labels from Martha Stewart for Grandin Road — put on fruit punch bottles for the kids and some nice Cabernet for the grown ups.  5:The spider vase fillers (from Pottery Barn) are so oversize and borderline cute that they won’t completely freak out the kids. 6: The Skeletal System Anatomical Chart is the real thing (found Birdie1′s Etsy shop). A little creepy, but cool.

7: So it’s a little on the overboard side, but how amazing would it be to wallpaper a wall in your dining room with this spooky Woods wallpaper by Cole & Son? 8: I suggested this black bird/crow costume (found on MarthaStewart.com) to my son, but he said he’d rather be a bumblebee. “Awwww, cute,” I said. “I think you’d be an adorable bumblebee.”

“Yeah. So I can have a stinger on my butt,” he said.

Oh, right. Of course.

sneak peek: christmas tea cups

It’s turning out to be a sneak peek week! Here’s a little peek at a project I’m doing for one of my very favorite clients, Isabella Smith. It’s a set of tea cups … this fir tree-inspired Christmas design will be produced for the holiday season. I’m also working on a few other projects for her (including a fun wrapping paper and a package design for one of her famous scented products). I’ll share photos of final goods once they come back from production.
