Haute off the Press: Citron, Champagne and Kraft Floral Julian Wedding Invitation

floral julian wedding invitation in citron and champagne ink with kraft envelopeOoooh, these are two of my very favorite color combos! Wedding invitations printed in citron ink paired with champagne … and rustic chic kraft envelopes printed with metallic champagne ink. J’adore, as Mémé Delphine would say. The design, Julian, was named after pretty California wildflowers spotted in the Julian mountain area, and I think it’s a great choice for a garden wedding.

color palette: summer’s end yellow green & white

// photo: Beatrice Firm

The rich, saturated color palette here reminds me that summer’s end is around the corner. There is something overripe and sticky hot sweet about this photo. Maybe it’s just that the deep forest, white and freesia yellows remind me of magnolia blossoms and sticky hot Charleston summers. My mom snapped the photo a few weeks ago at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

sneak peek: new succulent wedding invitation design

Here’s a sneak peek at one of our newest designs: our SUCCULENT wedding invitation suite. It’s one of a dozen brand new designs in our new Delphine Signature Collection wedding album. We took inspiration from the aloe plants, agave plants and other succulents growing in the Delphine studio courtyard. I love how it looks in blues and greens. For some extra pop, it looks fun with a black backround.

backyard flower arrangements

// photos: Erika Firm

A few floral arrangements my mom made for the house this week. Top: purple artichoke blooms from the neighborhood. Middle: roses from Mémé Delphine’s rose garden. Bottom: arrangement of roses, mimosa, tea roses and various backyard blooms. I love summer flower arrangements.

color palette: secret succulent garden

Mom planted a bunch of succulent cuttings in this pretty Italian wall well we had around the house. Who knows where we pick up all this stuff?!?? Love the color palette: verdant green, spring, rhubarb, stone and flame.

behind the scenes: wedding invitation photo shoot

I spent nearly all day last Friday prepping for Saturday morning’s wedding invitation photo shoot. The light is best in our home kitchen (we love to shoot in natural light), so we have to transport everything from the studio on boards.

Unfortunately, we had a very rare rainy day on Saturday, so the light wasn’t that great. We had to pull in lights to get the shoot finished. Normally, we’d just postpone the shoot, but our friend Adrianne Smith delivered some amazing flowers and special boutonnieres, and we wanted to use them before they wilted away.

Here are a couple of quick peeks. I’m still sifting through the hundreds of photos to find the handful that will end up on our website.Our WONDERLAND invitation, shown flat printed in a truly classic black and pink wedding invitation color combo. Adrianne made a beautiful classic white anemone boutonniere for us, and I think they complement each other perfectly.

Our PACIFIC BEACH invitation, shown flat printed in one of my all time favorite color combinations for wedding invitations: yellow and gray. Adrianne made a charming yellow feverfew boutonniere for us. Isn’t it darling? I love boutonnieres. I tried to convince John to wear it around the house after the shoot was complete, but he said it didn’t go with his holey sweatshirt.

color palette: romantic spring blossoms

The fruit trees in our backyard are blooming. There’s something magical about a pretty blossom on a leafless branch. I love the stark contrast. The colors in this photo may be one of the all time classic color combinations for weddings: soft, romantic blush pinks, with creamy off white, gray, and a pop of brighter pink. The palette of a bouquet of pink and white peonies, or a ballerina.

behind the scenes: carlsbad wholesale flower market with adrianne smith

Last Friday I took the day off to help my friend—and favorite florist—Adrianne Smith, prepare for one of her craziest days of the year: Valentine’s Day. We started off bright and early at the Carlsbad International Floral Trade Center, where Adrianne took me on a quick tour of the facility. It was bustling with energy and excitement, and many of the vendors we chatted with had been awake for more than 24 hours straight getting ready for this busy day.

Adrianne pre-ordered most of her supplies, so they were ready at various vendors’ stalls for us to wheel out to the car when we were finished with our tour.

Guess how many flowers we fit in Adrianne’s car? Well, I don’t know exactly, but I do know that if we had picked up one more bunch I may have had to walk home. I even carried some on my lap and A had some shoved between the seats. When we got back to her studio it took three of us about two hours just to unload the car and process all the stems.

I learned so much about the floral industry hanging out with A. Did you know that “fillers” and greenery can cost as much, if not more, than many flowers? She even taught me a few secrets to making a beautiful (and lasting) arrangement: soak floral foam before you cut it; trim stems on an angle; tulips will continue to grow after they are cut, so cut them shorter than the rest of an arrangement; design from the edges in to the center; texture is the key to an interesting bouquet; add water every day so the foam doesn’t dry out.

Isn’t it amazing how buckets of flowers, big sticks, bits of mossy goodness and bunches of wild greens can be transformed into stunning arrangements like this one? It still seems like magic to me, even after spending a day in the studio and watching the process first hand.

I’m in awe of this lady. Thank you, Adrianne, for letting me peek into your world for a day.

Invitation color combo trends: Out with purple, and in with blue and yellow

This weekend I helped out my dear friend Adrianne Smith (and favorite florist) as she prepared for one of her biggest days of the year, worked on our website, prepped for some upcoming photo shoots, and visited the Suite Spot in Carlsbad (Reni, Chelsea and Hannah’s shared studio space).

seed packages designed by delphine for isabella smith

These seed packet packaging designs were one of my favorite projects of all time. Pretty flowers, spring colors, clean design, interesting type (all in Danish) and the most lovely client you could imagine all combined! So far I’ve designed 22 varieties. They’re available in Isabella Smith Country Store shops and catalog, and on the Isabella Smith website.

haute off the press: chrysanthemums in aubergine

The leading color trend for 2010 wedding invitations here at the Delphine studio was aubergine purple. About half of the invitation orders we processed this year used some shade of purple. In design trends, our CHRYSANTHEMUMS design was one of the most popular designs this year. Normally I’m not much of a purple-lover, but I really do love the way this aubergine and crocus Chrysanthemums wedding invitation turned out.

Our CHRYSANTHEMUMS stickers were designed to work great either as return address stickers or as party favor stickers. I really like how they look in our “bleu” ink.
