Hi again Delphine! Erika I was just curious about how you got started – did you start as a freelancer or did you have other design jobs before starting your shop? How do you get logo and corporate business in addition to wedding business? Did the blog start first or the shop start first? What advice do you have to other freelancers/entrepreneurs? THANKS!!!

      Hi Kelsey,
Thanks for your note! I got started freelancing first — designing anything and everything I could. The business came first (I started designing over 15 years ago). The blog is relatively new, in comparison. I recommend reading the book Creative, Inc by Meg Mateo Ilasco and Joy Cho http://www.chroniclebooks.com/titles/art-design/craft/creative-inc.html — it’s full of great advice for creative entrepreneurs. Meg has a whole series of co-authored books about creative businesses (including Craft Inc, Mom Inc and Blog Inc). They are all great reads! Best wishes to you as you launch your new business!!! — Erika

    Hello Delphine,
My Fiance is in Marine bootcamp. We are getting married six days after he graduates. I am creating the invitations. We do not know his rank so do I need to put it on there if he is wearing his Dress Blues on the day of our wedding?

    • Erika Firm says:

Hi Vanessa, Congratulations to you and your fiancé! I ran your question by my husband John (a former Marine) and his recommendation is to list your fiancé’s rank as Private, since this is technically his rank as an active duty Marine recruit. Watch out for the sword smack if you’re doing a sword arch. Speaking from experience, the “welcome” into the Marine Corps can leave a welt ; ) — Erika

I am in the process of putting together my own album! Can you tell where you got your pages from? I’ve been looking all over for pages heavy enough to mount my samples. I’m thinking I might just make my own, but I wanted to find some already made before I attempted to that.

Hi Rebecca, I had the paper made. I know it’s hard to find heavy stock in the color you want. But if you’re looking for white or off-white, I know all the major brands (Neenah, Crane, Reich, Mohawk, etc) make 130lb and 160lb cover in neutral colors, so I’d give your paper reps a buzz. Good luck!
