delphine is hiring graphic designers and design internsThe Delphine studio is growing & we’re looking for a few fabulous designers. Check out our Craigslist ads for a Graphic Designer, Studio Intern, and Product Styling & Photography Intern.

GENERAL NOTES ABOUT DELPHINE INTERNSHIPS:
Internships are unpaid and last approximately 10 weeks; scheduling is flexible (min 8 hours per week).
Interns will not have access to letterpress print shop.
Academic credit is available (depending upon specific institution’s requirements).

Delphine Photography Internship

Delphine Photography Internship

We’re looking for a fabulous photography intern!

PHOTOGRAPHY INTERNSHIP
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
• Styling for Delphine product photo shoots (wedding invitations, stationery, greeting cards, etc.)
• Have access to Delphine’s extensive prop closet
• Photograph Delphine products in natural light (we have a Nikon SLR camera for your use, or if you prefer to use your own camera you may do so)
• Edit, color correct and crop photographs using Photoshop CS5
• General office assistance (i.e. organizing photo files, research and organizing props)

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:
• Photo styling techniques
• Considerations for marketing and selling design-centric products (via traditional print, digital and social media)
• Close contact with founders of growing design-driven company

REQUIREMENTS:
• Great style & ability to compose a compelling photograph & great photography skills with experience shooting in natural light
• Proficiency with Macintosh platform
• Proficiency in Photoshop CS5
• Completed at least 2 years of college level courses and at least 2 photography courses (or worked as photographer min. 1 year)
• Must have an Apple computer with Photoshop CS4 or CS5 installed
• Ability to use FTP site, internet savvy

GENERAL NOTES ABOUT DELPHINE INTERNSHIPS:
Internships are unpaid and last approximately 10 weeks.
Scheduling is flexible (min 8 hours per week — 4 in studio, 4 remote).
Applicants must have transportation to/from John’s Island, SC studio.
Interns will not have access to letterpress print shop.
Interns will meet at Delphine Studio and/or at public locations (such as library, coffee shop, etc) once per week.
Academic credit is available (depending upon specific institution’s requirements).

we’re hiring design, marketing and photography interns

Delphine is a stationery and gift company, as well as a graphic design studio. We’re looking for a few awesome Spring and Summer interns to assist with design & product development; advertising & marketing; and photography.

If you love paper, are into design, like blogs, know how to work a mac/illustrator/photoshop, know the difference between stationery and stationary, would like to learn about running a small biz/marketing/pr/letterpress, and can commit to 8 hours per week for ten weeks, then please visit our website for more details on specific internship opportunities at the Delphine studio.

We’re located in Rancho Santa Fe, California. Applicants must have transportation to/from Rancho Santa Fe. All internships are unpaid, but we promise you’ll learn a ton (and will pick up some sweet stationery along the way). Many of our former interns come back to do freelance work for us after completing their internship. 

We have three basic internships available: GRAPHIC DESIGN INTERN, ADVERTISING & MARKETING INTERN, and PHOTOGRAPHY INTERN.

dating myself: i remember 1980s jordache jeans

I love watching 1980s movies on Netflix. Last week I watched “Moscow on the Hudson,” which is set, in part, in Bloomingdales. It was fun to see all the 1980s product placement. A few things I remember from the movie: Jordache Jeans, Calvin Klein, Camp Beverly Hills, and Sergio Valente.

I mentioned this to someone here at the studio who was born in 1985. he had never heard of any of the above, save Calvin Klein. Am I that old? Ugh.

I don’t remember this exact Jordache commercial, but I do remember their slogan, “the Jordache look,” roller rinks and those tight high waisted beauties. I had a pink Hello Kitty comb in my back pocket for the ultimate in coolness.

sneak peek: 2011 calendar photo shoot

Today I’m going to let you peek behind the curtain to see how a seemingly casual, effortless photo like the one above actually comes together. It’s a looong process. First, we do some brainstorming about the story we’d like the photos to tell. Delphine intern Caleb Jones came up with the idea that the calendar photos would be the story of one person’s desk throughout the year. The calendar, pen box and cute birdie prop would stay in the same place each month, but all the goodies around it would reflect how a person’s desk, and life, changes from month to month.

The second step was to start pulling props from our giant collection of ephemera. A step I call:

It looks like a giant mess, but truly we have a plan!

 

Next, we create a tray for each photo, dividing up props for each month’s photo. We throw everything we can think of that would go with the month’s image. 

Then the exciting part: we prop a month and look through the lens. Then we edit, edit, edit … taking away lots of distractions so the star of the photo, the calendar, can shine.

 

Invariably, our toughest critic comes by to check out the scene and give the final Meow approval.

I hope you like our new 2011 desk calendar! I’ll post a few more final photos later today.

intern post: autumn favorites

As a person born on the first day of Autumn, I have always been a fan of this particular time of year. Despite the lack of “traditional” seasons here in southern California, one can never miss the sure signs that fall has arrived. As much as I enjoyed prancing around in my summer dresses for the last several months, there is something so comforting about cardigans, scarves and boots. The cooler weather (and spouts of rain) have left me wanting to curl up on the couch with a book and a cup of cocoa. (Sadly, the demands of this semester’s schoolwork mixed with real life doesn’t allow much time for those sorts of luxurious afternoons.) But even the busiest people can take advantage of the feeling of the season… just pull on your cute new sweater, grab a pumpkin spice latte, and notice the colorful leaves as you make your way to today’s destination.

Check out these autumny sweaters from Urban Outfitters. The Grandpa sweaters are my new favorite thing.

I can’t help it. Starbucks has delicious fun drinks for every season, and their designs are awesome! I buy their gift cards just because they are so cute.

intern post: inspired by paris

This past summer I had the chance to study abroad in London. During one of the weekends I took a side trip to Paris. This city of vintage type and amazing architecture was a great source of inspiration for my current work. Recently I had the chance to design a poster for the SDSU Theatre through a design course. Much of this poster came from my experience in Paris.
