Pirates in the Boys’ Room

Pirate Fabric Vinyl Wall Decals by Love Mae via DelphineAhoy, mateys! How stinkin’ cute are these pirate ship fabric wall decals by Love Mae? Just think of the stories you could make up at bedtime about these guys. That octopus looks mighty sneaky. I wonder if he knows it’s International Talk Like A Pirate Daytoday??

vintage car and vintage robot vinyl fabric wall decals by Love Mae via DelphineWe’re not up for painting our son’s room this year, but his new room could certainly use some color and fun. I think these retro – cool decals are the perfect way to add some charm to his room without breaking a sweat with a paint brush. The stickers are made of adhesive fabric, so they are removable and reusable — I think he’ll have fun rearranging them. Love Mae also has some super adorable girls’ room decals (think ponies and woodland creatures and other charming scenes). They even have a circus scene. Ridiculously adorable!

renovation: plaid for the big boy bedroom

photos by DELPHINE

FINALLY! The plaid dresser is done and put in A’s bedroom. To be fair, I must admit that the dresser started with light blue and white stripes, so we had a head start.

Ever since we finished the room the cat has started hanging out in there.

Here’s a little progress report on A’s bedroom renovation. We’ve finished all the room painting, including the magnetic paint stripe, and re-hung the surfboard.

ring me up: vintage telephones

You know how some places just have a super fun vibe about them? (Think the opposite of this blah boring boringness). Well, over the holiday weekend I went to a fantabulous party at a fellow wedding industry pal’s summer beach rental. A’s home has such a wonderful feeling to it. You walk in and know that there is a lot of fun going on there! I told her I felt like I was at summer camp as I oohed and ahhed over all the quirky details in the place (an open skylight in the bathroom; a fireplace in the dining room complete with rotisserie, a kitchy mural of hawaii in the basement). I fell in love with two things in particular: a giant vintage flower farm hand painted wood sign (promise next time I go over I’ll bring my camera), and a bubblegum pink rotary wall phone. Got me thinking …. hmmmm … my studio could use a vintage phone, couldn’t it? I found 3 phones I like so far (still searching for that perfect one).

1. Vintage mustard yellow telephone, Ebay.   2. Vintage aqua bell rotary telephone, Ebay.   3. Vintage aqua blue wall mounted telephone, Oldphoneworks.com

foxy wallpaper by ashley alexander

photo: studio nommo; wallpaper design by ashley alexander for studio nommo; orange fox illustration at right by katherine brannock for delphine

I AM smitten by Ashley Alexander’s (of I’m Smitten) new foxy wallpaper design for Studio Nommo. It looks great in a studio/office environment, but I think it would be equally lovely in a dining room. I’m envisioning a dining table with lots of birch candles, warm lighting, good friends, rustic wood dishes, and a steaming pot roast. And some popovers. And a bottle of yummy red wine. Mmmm. Now I’m hungry! Is it lunch time yet?

to do list: clean the studio

Normally I’m a fairly organized and tidy person. But lately it looks like a herd full of wild animals have been living in the studio. On the to do list today: clean up around here.

Red rim metal wire waste basket from Wisteria. I’ve got my eye on it as a wrapping paper holder, but I’m not quite sure if it’s tall enough.

holiday: day of the dead

photos courtesy Ruby Lang

Halloween is just around the corner … and so is The Day of The Dead. Each year the amazingly talented Ruby Lang lovingly installs an ofrenda within SoLo to celebrate the holiday. This year’s theme is “Alimenta Para El Almo” (“Food for the Soul”). She decorated with traditional sugar skulls, fresh flowers, religious artifacts, a basket of limes, and plenty of food. The altar stands about 12 feet tall and is chock full of treasures and tiny details. You can check it out through November 1st at SoLo (on Cedros Avenue in Solana Beach, CA).

decorate: the bedroom

photos by Jessica Davis • painting by Constance Athens

The only thing I really like about our bedroom is this gorgeous painting by Constance Athens, a painting my grandmother did and our Charleston bed by Baker. We’ve lived here for about five years and each morning I wake up to dijon mustard yellow ceiling and walls. Ick.

We’re using the painting to pull inspiration for a new paint color, and I’m on the lookout for some nice velvet fabric in a fun color for the couch, a new coffee table  and a new bedspread. Suggestions welcome! (Oh, and no, we don’t usually have our curtains like that…was just to get more light in the room for the picture)

inspiration: do something about it

do something about it print by orange beautiful  • photo by Vallentyne Photography

One of my favorite things in my studio is this Do Something About It gocco print by Orange Beautiful. The glitter E’s were a Christmas gift from my mom last year. It’s a nice reminder that you are responsible for your own destiny. I firmly believe that you make your own luck.

little lamb baby shower: part one

I’ve finally started sorting through all the photos from the Little Lamb baby shower I co-hosted a few weeks ago, and will be posting them soon. Meanwhile, I thought I’d share a bit about how I planned the party.

The first thing I did was to get some help! Parties are a lot of work, so I leaned heavily on friends and my mom to help pull it all together (thanks, everyone!) First things first: we established a date, budget, general theme, and set a cap on the guest list (ours was 18). We chose a date a few months out, to give us plenty of time to plan; we all pitched in some cash at the beginning to one person (me) so that I could be in charge of buying all the décor, invites, flowers, etc. And we chose the “little lamb” theme and spring green colors because we knew that was the theme of the baby’s nursery décor.

My biggest tip for planning a little party is to shop your own home (and your friends’ homes) first, before buying a single thing! Luckily Carrie’s nursery décor happens to be my own favorite color, green, so I had lots of “decorations” around already.

Use your own talents, and those of your friends, to help save money. Since I’m a stationery designer I, naturally, designed the invites. My mom, who has a gift for floral arranging, offered to handle the flowers, someone else offered to do all the baking, and so on. This saved us a lot of cash!

custom invitations by delphine

While I’m a huge fan of letterpress (duh), we went with low-cost digital printing for the invites. For about the cost of just a letterpress invititation, we were able to digitally print double sided invitations, registry inserts, thank you cards for favors for guests, thank you cards for Carrie, place cards, table cards, place cards, and sticker labels.

A preview of the dessert table.

The yellow flowers arrangements are actually plants (about $5 each at Home Depot). Mom lined the inside of big glass vases with citron colored paper, and placed lemons from the back yard on top of the pots. I grouped three paper balls leftover from my son’s birthday party under the chandelier (they store flat, and they were less than $3 each … they’re on their third party already!). I made the “BABY” banner with leftover cards from the invitation press run and a spool of ribbon from the dollar bin at Michael’s. Instead of buying a pricey cake, we used box mix, spiced it up a bit with Alex’s secret sauce, and made adorable cupcakes.

Next time I’ll share more details from the baby shower, including some downloadable pdfs for straw flags and cupcake toppers. Meanwhile, if you have any questions please leave a comment.

design trend: the eighties

Screenshot from St. Elmo’s Fire. Oh, how I love thee, Netflix! Sometimes when I’m working on tedious files I find it relaxing to “watch instantly” on Netflix. Thanks, Eunice, for introducing me to this amazing feature. I was watching this classic film the other day and grabbed a picture of the interior of Jules’ apartment. HELLO Pink! And is that Billy Idol or just a look-alike? Dangly cross earring and all?  It seems like a lot of designers working today are influenced by the 80s vibe. Kelly Wearstler is one for sure, right? Have to admit I’m not loving the 80s scene; don’t expect to see me in this any time soon. But in spirit of full disclosure, I did buy a pair of crocus colored tights. Not sure if I can bring myself to wear them, though.
