E+J Bedroom Redo Update

gray zig zag chevron bedroomOur bedroom is slowly coming along. We installed gray-blue curtains nearly the same color as the “Heavy Goose” walls (and no, they don’t always look crazy like that — just were pinned back behind the door handles to let in some light for the photo shoot earlier this week). The curtains are from Ikea.

Today I ordered a gray chevron rug and zig zag pillow shams from Urban Outfitters. I realize that at some point I will tire of chevrons, but I think a $100 price tag for both zig zag-a-riffic pieces is keeping it under control.

Urban Outfitters MusicSidenote: did you know that Urban Outfitters has free albums and streaming music? Nice. I’m listening now (Phoenix … excellent). Thanks, UO!

My Dreamy Workspace

ghost chair silver desk polaroidThe studio is in the midst of a big cleanup/reorganization. It’s in the “it’s going to look worse before it gets better” stage. It is so incredibly messy in there that I had to move my computer to a new workspace just to be able to think. Can you work in a messy office? I absolutely cannot do it. The “noise” of the mess makes my brain hurt … and it’s difficult to design without a functioning brain! This is my temporary workspace. I borrowed a Ghost chair from Mom. I love it except for the fact that I can’t cross my legs into my lap — Mom told me if I scratch the chair I’m toast!

Sneak Peek at the Delphine 2012 Calendar

sneak peek at Delphine 2012 CalendarIt’s never dull here at the Delphine studio. Yesterday we had a photo shoot. Sneak peek behind the scenes shot above left. Add “reluctant model” to my list of duties as a business owner. We also picked up our new 2012 calendar from the pressroom. It’s our most colorful one yet. We’ll take photos later this week and get it up on the site soon. Meanwhile if you’d like to order let me know — they are ready to ship!

Tools for Design Inspiration: a Wish List

tools to inspire design wish listIt was a very, very, very busy summer and early fall here at the Delphine design studio. So much design happening here I could hardly keep track (or breathe). I have been dreaming about pixels and Pantone colors, fonts and finishes, brand theory and color theory.

Now that a major chunk of work is off my desk I feel like treating myself to a little something from my wish list. Basically, I’ve bribed myself: Erika, if you stay up one more hour and design 10 more files you’ll get a treat. I like to tell myself (and the bookkeeper) that everything on this list is really an investment back into my design career. The purse, you ask? Oh, that … that is a very important tool: a file carrier for safely transporting client files to and from meetings. Right? Pssst, clients: Christmas bonus me anytime : )

WISH LIST ITEMS: No. 1 ”Dish,” by Shax Riegler, a book full of inspiring colors and patterns.   No. 2  A trip to AltSummit, a conference full of inspiring people.   No. 3 A beautiful tortoise fountain pen from Sam Flax South, because I’m full of flashes of inspiration and need to get those thoughts down on paper.  No. 4 STOP THE PRESSES: I NEEEEEED THIS: the new genius Wacom Inkling, to sketch illustrations in my sketchbook while capturing a digital likeness of said sketch in vector format. That’s right. Genius!!  No. 5 A subscription to Uppercase magazine, full of inspiring stories and pretty pictures.  No. 6 Hudson bag, because it looks perfect for carrying around all the items on my wish list (and stylish enough to carry to No. 2).

Hot Air Balloons

blue sky day hot air balloonTuesdays are photo shoot days. It’s such a great break from sitting at the computer all day. But booooo, it’s cloudy and icky this morning, so I’m not sure how much shooting we’ll get to do. Wishing it was a blue sky day, like last Sunday, when we went to the pumpkin patch near Rancho Santa Fe, California and were surprised to see hot air balloons launching in the field next to the pumpkin patch parking lot. The pink one actually hit our car as it was filling up!

neon hot air balloonsDon’t you love the neon pink balloon? The color combo of neon pink with bright yellow, hot red and black is so cool.

Pretty Peach Color Palette

Peach Apricot Melon Color Palette Vintage Prize RibbonsLast week I spotted these gorgeous vintage horse ribbons at Jennifer Price‘s boutique inside SoLo. I just love the color palette, which reminds me of summer peaches.

Jennifer Price Horse Ribbon FrameI can totally see these vintage prize ribbons in a wedding setting — perhaps as alternative to a boutonniere, or to mark table numbers (you can insert a photo in the center). So pretty!

Making a Wholesale Wedding Invitation Album

Making a wholesale wedding invitation albumIn preparation for this afternoon’s Tradeshow Bootcamp seminar about wholesale wedding invitation albums, I thought I’d share a peek behind the scenes at how to put together an invitation album.

It all starts with good designs! Once you have those down (gulp) it’s time to print lots of samples, get organized, and start up an assembly line. We built a temporary shelter outside behind the studio with lots of fans and ventilation so we wouldn’t croak from using so much spraymount. We went through at least five cases of the stuff.

Delphine wholesale wedding albumThe inside of our album is designed for the dealer first, the bride second. Why? Because if the dealer isn’t happy with the book it will never get pulled from the shelf! Things we include to make the album easy to shop:

1. A few pages of info … about the studio, a primer on print methods, tips on how to customize our designs, and pretty photos of our designs in colors other than sampled in the book. Pages of ink swatches, papers, fonts, etc. And, of course, simple, easy to use price pages.

2. A divider page to separate each design (we have 22!). The divider page has the name of the suite, a keyword that relates to the type of wedding we envision the design working for (i.e. elegant, romantic, whimsical), and a short story about the design — what inspired it, what type of wedding we think it’s best for, etc. The divider pages are all different colors, to help the dealer flip to the right page.

3. Foldout pages. The front page shows invitation and response cards. The inside shows detail cards, like accommodations, thank yous, menus, etc. On the right side we show party goodies (the details that make an event, in my opinion).

4. The back of the divider page has a schematic with thumbnails of all the items available in the design.

5. Perhaps most important for the dealer: an AS SHOWN card, listing all the ink colors and fonts used in the shown samples.

Delphine Dealer GoodiesOf course we LOVE our dealers and want to make the sales process as easy for them as possible. If they are fumbling around the book looking for swatches and prices they aren’t focusing on the bride! So we made a separate Dealer Deck, with swatches of all our inks, patterns, fonts, papers, envelopes and more. It also has a FAQ card listing turnaround time, quick pricing for 100 invitation suites, and our contact information.

We also give dealers a disc with blog and website ready photos for their use, PDF order forms, and plenty of loose samples for display.

My biggest advice for putting together a wholesale wedding invitation album is to make friends with a local stationer, ask a lot of questions and do a bunch of research. Oh, and don’t underprice yourself. Make every order worth your time! Just because you’re an artist doesn’t mean you want to work for free. And trust me, the dealers are working hard too, and want each order to pay off, too.

For more pics and details about how we made our wedding album visit this post.

If you are a stationer interested in carrying the new Delphine Signature Collection wedding invitation album please get in touch. We have a few books left looking for a happy home.

La Jolla Cove

La Jolla Cove CaliforniaSometimes I forget how lucky I am to live in Southern California. I spend all my days (and many nights) holed away in the studio. Last Friday I met my dear friend Mel for lunch at La Jolla Cove and the beauty of the Pacific Ocean really took my breath away.

Wanted for the Studio: a comfortable office chair

comfortable office chair roundup for the studioI really need (okay, want) a new office chair. I sit at my computer all damn day and my butt is getting sore from sitting on a hard chair (I currently rock No. 7 in pale blue — a piece of plywood from Ikea). I started looking around for a new chair and HELLO, can you say crazypants prices? The new Eames Executive from DWR (No. 5) fits all my criteria except one. It is decidedly not cheap at just over $3k! And it’s not even leather!

I took a look at office supply stores but all I could find are ugly black chairs that look like they belong in a cubicle. Ick. I do like white, but am super concerned about a white chair getting disgustingly dirty in my studio, since it will get a ton of use. I am leaning toward a green, gray or yellow chair.

At the top of my list is No. 1, a replica of the famous Eames chair — gotta love that Pistachio color! But I’m a little nervous to commit. Will I like having arms on my chair? Will it be too soft? Will the light color get destroyed immediately by rogue Sharpie marks? What should I do????

Office chair roundup: /1/AG Management Chair in Pistachio from Advanced Interior Designs $219  /2/ Ripple Leather Chair in Ivory from Crate & Barrel $299  /3/ Freedom Task Chair from DWR $2,465 /4/ Haworth Very White Office Chair from Crate & Barrel $799 /5/ Eames Executive Chair from DWR $3,079  /6/Eames Aluminum Management Chair in Apple Green (LOVE) from DWR $1,889  /7/ Jules office chair from Ikea $39 /8/ White Grant Office Chair from World Market $229
