north county graphic design: meetup wed june 8, 2011

Join us Wednesday, June 8, 2011

8 am – 9 am at E Street Café in Encinitas, California

Kick off the day on a positive note with other North County graphic designers. No major agenda, just say hello and get to know each other and share some great coffee. If you’re really not a morning person or are just plain cranky until the caffeine kicks in [ahem… me], then just “nod” and take time to adjust to the morning sunshine. We look forward to seeing you!

R.s.v.p. by leaving a comment on this blog (or on the LinkedIn thread or email Kathy or I directly). To join our LinkedIn group: do a GROUPS search for “North County Graphic Designers” on LinkedIn to join.

I hope to see you all there. All creatives welcome.

NCGD co-founded by Delphine and KMG. Artwork by Kathy McGraw.

Photos Kelly Guenther

How do I even begin to describe how amazing this event was?!?!! It was so fun to let some steam off with fellow Paper Peeps. Many thanks to everyone who helped organize my 7th Annual National Stationery Show (NSS) Meetup. Extra thanks to all the sponsors. And extra EXTRA thanks to everyone who trekked out to Brooklyn after a looong day at the Javits Center to party with us.

NSS 2011 recap

I’ve returned from a whirlwind trip to New York for the National Stationery Show (NSS). Although I didn’t exhibit, I still managed to run myself ragged … running to meetings, parties, dinners, impromptu conferences, snapping photos, taking notes, making friends, planning future projects & events. I had a great time, except for the part where I was sick and the part where I was stuck on a loooong flight home, ill, on my birthday : (

It will take me a few more days to decompress (and catch up on actual work), but meanwhile if you’d like to read about the show, I highly recommend these sources:

Oh So Beautiful Paper: Nole has the very best roundups on all the new stuff! It’s like going to the show without having to step foot in the Javits Center yourself.

Brooklyn Bride and Mom Inc. Daily have fun recaps of the 7th annual NSS meetup.

I am also working on a series of graphic design trend report posts from NSS (think Ikat, overprinting, neon, gold, watercolor) and the first one went live today on Creative-SoCal.

Thanks for understanding as posts are sporadic the next week or so as I recover from the show and my illness. Special hugs to all of you whom I met at the show who mentioned to me that you read my blog. I truly appreciate your support!

lessons from first graders

I’m in New York for the National Stationery Show (I promise to report trands and scenes from the show soon here and on my other gig, Creative-SoCal), but meanwhile just had to post these pictures from my son’s first grade classroom. The class read the book “It’s Okay to be Different” and then had the idea to write additional “pages” to the book. I love what they came up with!

font geek moment: quanta

The studio looks like a hurricane blew through here. Multiple deadlines and last minute projects and juggling clients is wearing on me. I’m also getting ready for the NSS meetup in Brooklyn, but wanted to quickly post about the big sale on VEER. Everything is 25 percent off through June 10, 2011. As soon as things settle down I’m going to scoop up some new fonts, and QUANTA is on the list. What do you have your eye on?

color palette: moody luxe inspired by alexander mcQueen

In just a few days I’ll be in New York! Of course I’m looking forward to all the trade shows and seeing a ton of great designs (and designers); but I admit that I’m most looking forward to a visit to the Met with a dear friend to see the Alexander McQueen exhibit

6 essential ingredients for maximum creativity

A little peek behind the scenes and into my creative process … just about every week I sit down with a stack of magazines, catalogs, flyers, brochures and ephemera and update my journal/scrapbook/inspiration book. I use it to keep track of color stories I’m digging, track trends, sketch new designs, write lists and doodle. Any time I’m feeling stuck on a project I go back to “the book” for inspiration. This method for overcoming creative block has yet to fail me (knock knock knock on wood).

For me, there are 6 essential ingredients for maximum creativity: ///1///Good tunes (right now I’m listening to Beastie Boys and R.E.M. constantly)    ///2/// Pinterest. How I ever survived without it I have no idea   ///3/// My stack of notebooks, filled with doodles, notes, inspiration and lots of color   ///4/// Magazines & any printed material  ///5/// Ruby red grapefruit. Mmmm.    ///6/// Iced coffee to stave off caffeine headaches.
