I’m in New York for NYIGF. Today and tomorrow I’m setting up the booth (we have a display in the VIGO cards booth). Sunday the show opens … come see us in booth 2808. And, of course, swing by on Monday morning for some bubbly! See you soon.

wish list: ipad

I’m sure it goes without saying, but the new Apple ipad is at the very tip top of my wish list now.

(excuse the poorly manipulated image … just was fantasizing about reading my favorite blogs while away from my desk.)

north county graphic design meet up

I’m so excited to announce the first (hopefully of many) North County [San Diego] graphic design meet up. Many thanks to Kathy McGraw, who pitched in and did the super cute artwork, for pushing me to get this going.

Here’s the scoop:

Join us Wednesday, February 24, 2010
at the Pannikan in Del Mar (in the Flower Hill Promenade shopping center)
8 am – 9 am

Kick off the day on a positive note with other North County graphic designers! No agenda, just say hello and get to know each other and share some great coffee. If you’re really not a morning person or are just plain cranky until the caffeine kicks in [ahem... me], then just “nod” and take time to adjust to the morning sunshine! We look forward to seeing you!

There is no need to R.S.V.P., you can just show up, but if you’d like please leave your name in the comments section so we can have an idea of how many people will attend. If you plan to come and would like a banner for your blog or website please let me know. See you soon!

:::UPDATE::: If you’d like to be on the email list to be notified of future events please email erika [at] delphinepress [dot] com. Thanks!

in the press: stationery trends

I was excited to see Tessa’s quinceanera invitations in the latest (Winter 2010) issue of Stationery Trends magazine. But Tessa was completely over the moon. I loved watching her face when she cracked open the magazine to “her” page. Priceless. Thanks, Sara and Stationery Trends, for that special moment!

in the press: santa barbara magazine

I’m a *little* late posting this one … many many thanks to the sweet editors at Santa Barbara for listing our letterpress “illuminated initials” (monogram) note cards as a lovely gift for the “feminine and sophisticated” woman on your holiday gift list. (December 2009 issue of Santa Barbara Magazine).

Note: we’re nearly sold out of all the 16 letters … but hold tight: we’re reprinting in a few weeks!

quoted: design + business

QUOTED is a new column that I’ll be posting from time to time, with quotes from business and graphic design books I’ve read.

I’m reading “The Game Changer,” by A. G. Lafley and Ram Charan. It’s an insider’s look at innovation can drive growth (Lafley is the chariman and ceo of Procter & Gamble; Charan is a leading business consultant). I particularly identified with the quote (above) about design. Just a few days ago I updated my portfolio and wrote that a major goal of good design is to create an experience. I was thinking particularly about design as it relates to branding retail stores, and I think that Lafley’s statement is exactly what I was trying to describe.

How would you define good design?

excuses, excuses …

I know, I’ve neglected the blog this month. Sorry! I hate excuses, but I have to say that with the combo of planning for a sixth birthday party (2 parties, actually), a house full of guests (whom I don’t get to see very often), stomach flu, preparation for NYIGF, creation of a brand new greeting card collection, a few unexpected design opportunities (requiring an updated portfolio), a huge design project with an overseas client, and an overall blah feeling, I’ve been overwhelmed and haven’t done a very good job with this blog thing. Do you ever feel overwhelmed? What do you do to cope? My desk is a real mess right now. I think that I’ll clean it off and have a fresh start…maybe that will help.

One thing that is helping our family stay organized this year is a chalkboard. It’s been collecting cobwebs in the corner of the warehouse for years, but we just cleaned it up and put it up in the kitchen, at 6 year-old eye level, with our son’s to do items for the day. Every morning while he eats breakfast we talk about what we’ll do that day and put it up on the board. I think it helps to have some structure to the day. He also really enjoys checking things off as we complete them. Sometimes he erases things he doesn’t like to do (the word “homework” seems to mysteriously dissapear nearly every day).

font love: sudestada

I found this lovely handwriting font called Sudestada while researching for a fun project we’re working on here in the studio. I can’t reveal the project just yet … but it has to do with flowers.
